What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are solutions that have specific strength(s) of single or combinations of acids in them. Sometimes they might contain additional ingredients like Retinol, Resorcinol, Croton oil or Hydroquinone. The main goal of chemical peels is to produce controlled “burning” and exfoliation of top layers of skin. Depending on the type and strengths of acids used one might not see any visible peeling at all on the skin with lower strength peels or might see significant flaking of the dead skin with higher strengths of acids. The goal is to achieve visible or invisible exfoliation and more turnover of top layers of skin.

What are the benefits of medical grade chemical peels?

Medical strength peels are performed in a physician’s office or under a physician’s oversight for safety, and proper management of the protocol. With the top layers of skin shedding, the texture, color and evenness of skin tone also improve. Pigmentation including sun damage, post acne color changes and melasma also lift off. In addition, it also stimulates the collagen production in the deeper layers of skin. This provides overall antiaging benefits and clearing of the skin in those with acne related imperfections.

How many sessions will be required?

It varies depending on the conditions being addressed, length of the problem, skin type and the types of peels used. One must understand that years of damage can not be address in a few months. Typically, the sessions are done once or twice a month for a series of 6-8 sessions. Sometimes we must make changes to the protocol and type of peel used based on previous results. Some people might need multiple modalities of treatments in addition, like lasers, IPL, microneedling and home skin care with medical grade products.

What issues can be addressed with medical grade chemical peels?

Chemical peels can address fine lines, mild wrinkles from collagen loss, acne, pigmentation from acne, superficial acne scars, brown spots from UV induced sun damage, melasma (“pregnancy mask”), pore size, and uneven skin tone. Vi Peel body can be used for dark discoloration in underarms, knees and anywhere else in the body.

What to expect during a chemical peel?

Your provider will follow the protocol that varies from one peel to another. You might feel a burning or prickly sensation for a few minutes which will subside. Skin might feel tight or shiny. This is normal. Some peels like Vi Peel are virtually painless due to the numbing effect from phenol in it.

What to expect after the chemical peels?

Once the peel is performed skin might feel shiny. With the lower concentrations of peels, you may not visibly see actual peeling of the skin. With certain peels the exfoliation is microscopic and more cell turnover that may not be visible to the naked eye. With higher strength peels, by around 48 hours there may be flaking or even darkening of some areas the skin. It might look like a “burn” to the inexperienced. It actually represents the top layer of the dead skin layer separating. It will flake off over the next few days. Your provider will give you very specific instructions unique to each peel that you must follow. Most important things are to avoid sun exposure, not picking at the peeling skin, moisturize liberally and follow the aftercare instructions strictly. During this time, it is important to avoid contact with saliva from licking by pets and humans as this might introduce infection and lead to complications. For the same reason it is important to avoid face masks for a few days after the procedure.
