Frequently Asked QuestionsÂ
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal produces long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal of every hair. Most patients achieve a large, lasting decrease in hair density, with remaining hairs growing back finer and lighter. Genetic and hormonal factors (such as PCOS) can prompt new growth over time, so occasional maintenance sessions will be needed for most areas.
How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?
Most people need an initial series of about six to eight sessions, spaced according to the treatment area, to see significant results. Some patients — particularly those with darker skin tones or hormone-driven growth — benefit from additional sessions. Dr. Chandra confirms your plan at your consultation in East Brunswick.
Does laser hair removal work on blonde, gray, or red hair?
The hair-removal laser targets dark pigment, so it works best when there is brown or black color at the hair root. Gray, white, and most blonde or red hair generally does not respond well, though Dr. Chandra has seen some response in reddish-brown hair. In some cases we can pre-treat lighter hair to improve the response; we’ll assess and discuss this during your consultation.Â
Can you treat tanned or darker skin safely?
Yes, but with caution. We treat all skin tones, and for tanned or darker skin we use the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, which targets the deeper follicle while relatively protecting the superficial skin. A tan raises the risk of side effects in all skin types, so avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment gives the safest, most comfortable results. Even with the Nd:YAG laser, no treatment is 100% risk-free in darker skin.Â
Who will perform my laser hair removal, and what are their credentials?
Dr. Ram Chandra, MD performs the laser treatments himself — not a technician or esthetician. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Laser Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Cosmetic Laser Surgery (a distinction held by only 38 practitioners worldwide), with 18+ years and 60,000+ procedures across all skin types.Â
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most patients describe quick, warm “snaps.” Comfort depends on the area and your tolerance, and we use medical-grade numbing cream (for areas such as the bikini and lips), contact cooling, cryogen, and cool air to make it very manageable. We keep settings effective because overly gentle settings lead to disappointing results and can occasionally trigger more hair (paradoxical hypertrichosis).
How should I prepare, and what is aftercare like?
Shave the area as instructed, avoid sun and tanning for several weeks beforehand, and arrive with clean, product-free skin. Afterward, avoid sun, hot showers, saunas, and heavy sweating for a few days, and use SPF 50. We provide written instructions tailored to your skin type.Â
How much does laser hair removal cost, and do you offer financing?
Pricing depends on the area, your skin and hair type, medical history, the technology used, and the number of sessions, so we quote it after an in-person consultation (a 100-lb person’s full legs are not the same as a 200-lb person’s). The physician consultation takes about 45 minutes or more. We often apply the consultation fee toward your first treatment. We offer in-house payment plans, and you can also use Cherry or CareCredit to spread payments over 12 months or more.
Is laser hair removal safe for Black, Indian, Middle Eastern, or other darker skin tones?
Yes — with the right laser and an experienced operator. For richly pigmented (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) skin, we rely on the 1064 nm Nd:YAG, which reaches past surface melanin to target the follicle, lowering the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation. On darker skin, having a physician choose the device and settings is the single biggest safety factor. However, for the darkest skin (dark Fitzpatrick 6), even Nd:YAG may not give results comparable to what a lighter skin-type person can achieve from an Alexandrite laser.Â
